On the afternoon of July 3, 1863, Major General George Pickett commanded a division in the First Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. In this scene from my movie 'Gettysburg,' Pickett (Stephen Lang) rides up to Brigadier General Lewis A. Armistead (Richard Jordan) before exhorting the troops to fight for 'Olde Virginia.'
We filmed this sequence at the actual positions at the Gettysburg National Military Park from where the troops were deployed and the attack was launched. While precision is always elusive when dealing with past historical events, our on-set historical advisors availed themselves of the best research available at the time.
Hats off to Brian Pohanka and Dale Fetzer. Brian also portrayed Brigadier General Alexander S. Webb, Army of the Potomac.
Pickett's Charge was filmed on the hallowed ground up to the Emmitsburg Road. We could not film beyond that point because of the Observation Tower (since demolished) and the many monuments now along Cemetary Ridge.
We recreated the 19th Century Emmitsburg Road, the 'bloody angle' and the copse of trees on private property west of the National Park. It took truckloads of stone, dirt and rail fencing - a monumental undertaking, organized with skill and determination by our intrepid production designer Cary White.
'Gettysburg' in either its theatrical or Director's Cut versions is available in DVD/Blu-Ray or instant streaming at Amazon Prime and other online streamers.
