Songkou 松口- Hakka diaspora mass migration to South East Asia. Peaceful Meijiang river 梅江河 today.

A local resident shown us around the Port where the Hakka people left for Shantou 汕头 via Songkou 松口 on Meijiang river 梅江河 before leaving on steam boats to South East Asia. We're then invited to the house for lunch. Hakka exodus was largely due unequal land reform between the local Cantonese and Hakka that led to an uprising of both western backed Taiping revolution (Hakka Christian group) and the Qing gov. As the Qing were well equipped, Hakka were defeated and escaped through Meijiang river (via Songkou port) to the southern port of Shantou before arriving in South East Asia.
