The Government of India has informed the Lok Sabha that NavIC currently cannot provide standalone positioning services because only three satellites—IRNSS-1B, IRNSS-1I and NVS-01—are available for Positioning, Navigation and Timing services. NavIC, or Navigation with Indian Constellation, is India’s indigenous regional satellite navigation system developed by ISRO. It is designed to provide positioning, navigation and timing services across India and up to approximately 1,500 kilometres beyond the Indian boundary. However, a minimum of four operational navigation satellites is required to calculate an accurate standalone position. Why are three satellites not enough? A navigation receiver must calculate four unknown values: latitude, longitude, altitude and the error in its internal clock. Three satellites provide only three measurements. A fourth satellite provides the additional measurement required to correct the receiver’s clock error and determine its location accurately. In this video, we explain the current operational status of NavIC, the difference between standalone and multi-constellation navigation, why at least four satellites are required for positioning, the role of atomic clocks, the importance of NVS-03, and why NavIC matters for India’s civilian and strategic autonomy.
