NASCAR hated Smokey Yunick's Chevy 292 turbo, and this is the story of why. Smokey Yunick turned a slow Chevy inline-six truck engine into a turbocharged NASCAR threat that challenged the V8 establishment, until the rulebook was rewritten to stop it.
In 1973, the fuel crisis hit America and NASCAR suddenly had to look like it cared about efficiency. Smokey saw his chance. He took the humble 292 cubic inch inline-six, a workhorse built for delivery trucks, and added a custom turbo system, an intercooler and a blow-through carburetor. The result was a small, light, torquey engine that reportedly went toe to toe with big-block 427 V8s.
Then came the part nobody expected. Instead of banning the engine, NASCAR changed the math on turbo displacement and turned a legal 292 into a paper 496. In this video we break down the build, the numbers, the politics and the legacy of the engine NASCAR never let race.
