The International Harvester M-386 was one of the key vehicles behind the MGR-1 Honest John, America's first tactical nuclear rocket system.
Developed during the early years of the Cold War, Honest John was a massive 762 mm unguided artillery rocket capable of carrying nuclear, conventional high-explosive, or chemical warheads. Despite having no sophisticated guidance system, its mobility and simplicity made it an important part of US and NATO tactical nuclear forces for decades.
This video explores the complete Honest John rocket system, including the International Harvester M-386 truck-mounted launcher, the M55 rocket transporter, and the M62 Medium Wrecker used to assemble, load, and recover equipment in the field.
We also look at the development of the M31 and Improved M50 Honest John rockets, their range and accuracy, the W7 and W31 nuclear warheads, and how the system eventually gave way to the more advanced MGM-52 Lance.
From the massive 6×6 launch truck to the specialized support vehicles behind it, this is the story of one of the most unique mobile nuclear artillery systems of the Cold War.
