Jamuna // 56 // Flustered: Oh, Aastha dear! Just look outside—what a downpour! Water has started dripping from the thatched roof; quickly place some vessels and a bucket underneath, child, or else the entire floor will be flooded!
Aastha // 28 // Hurriedly: Oh yes, *Maji*, I’ll place the bucket right away... please don't worry...
Narration :- Aastha brought two steel pots and an old bucket from the kitchen and placed them beneath the water dripping from the roof.
The water began to fall into the vessels. Aastha // 28 // Lost in thought: "Maaji, we really have to get this fixed now; how long can we manage with vessels and buckets placed like this?"
Jamuna // 56 // Dejectedly: "Yes, dear, you're right... but right now, just managing to get the household rations is a big deal. We can't even think about repairing the roof at the moment."
Aastha // 28 // With a faint smile: "Alright, Maaji, don't you worry. We'll make do with what we have for now. Let me check the kitchen; I need to cook, after all."
Narration: Saying this, Aastha headed towards the kitchen. Upon opening the flour container, she saw only a couple of handfuls of flour left at the bottom. When she shook the rice container, the sound indicated very little rice inside. The lentil container was nearly empty, and the oil tin held only a few spoonfuls.
Aastha // 28 // To herself, worriedly: "The rations are practically gone... I don't know what I can possibly cook with this. And even if we somehow get through today, there won't be anything left for the next time."
Narration: Just then, Gudiya appeared at the kitchen doorway.
Gudiya // 17 // Innocently: "Bhabhi! What's for dinner today? I'm absolutely starving."
Aastha // 28 // With a forced smile: "Oh, my Gudiya, you aren't ready yet? Put on your uniform quickly, or you'll be late for school. Don't worry about the food; I'll handle that."
Gudiya // 17 // With a faint smile: "No, Bhabhi, I'm not going to school today! Look how hard it's raining; chances are, not even the teachers have made it to school in this weather. But Bhabhi... you really look worried." "Tell me, what’s the matter? If you need any help, just say so; I can lend a hand with the cooking."
Aastha // 28 // (Affectionately): "Oh no, my dear, it’s nothing serious. Why do you worry at such a young age? This is the time for your studies; now that school is out for the day, go home and study."
Gudiya // 17 // (Smiling): "Alright, but if you need anything at all, just call me!"
Narration: Gudiya agreed, but Aastha’s worry didn't subside. Just then, Mohan stepped out of the room, holding an old umbrella. Aastha quickly got up and went over to him.
Aastha // 28 // (Concerned): "Mohan-ji, on your way back this evening, please pick up some flour, lentils, and a cheap vegetable. We’re almost out of groceries."
Mohan // 29 // (Irritated): "Oh Aastha, let me leave first. Who knows how late I’ll be back from work today."
Aastha // 28 // (Calmly): "That’s exactly why I’m telling you now. There’s nothing left in the house."
Mohan // 29 // (Irritably): "Look, I don't know when I'll be back. Here, take whatever money I have; just manage with that."
Aastha // 28 // (Surprised): "Mohan-ji... this is so little money; we won't be able to get groceries with this. And you earned a full day's wage yesterday..."
Mohan // 29 // (Exasperated): "Don't ask me for an account of the money; I gave you whatever I had... I don't know if groceries can be bought with this amount or not."
Aastha // 28 // (Reasoning): "I’m not asking for myself. There are five or six people in the house. With this much money, the flour, lentils, and vegetables... nothing will be enough."
Mohan // 29 // (Angrily): "You don't earn any money, yet you keep demanding an account of every single rupee from me!" I work hard all day. I’ll give whatever I feel like giving. I don’t need to answer to anyone.
Aastha // 28 // (Sadly): I’m not asking for an account, Mohan-ji... I’m just talking about running the household.
Mohan // 29 // (Shouting): Just cook whatever you can with the money I’ve given you. If you can’t cook anything with it, then don’t cook at all!
