BERM: THE BASICS A SWALE is a broad, shallow, gently sloped channel (usually covered in grass) that intercepts surface runoff and guides it slowly to a safe outlet. A BERM is a low mound of soil built on the downhill side of the swale (often using the dirt you just dug out). It acts as a barrier to keep water in the channel. 🛠️ STEP-BY-STEP DIY INSTALLATION PROCESS: 1. Find the Path & Outlet first (e.g., a rain garden, dry well, ditch, or daylight edge). Never direct water toward your foundation or a neighbor's property! 2. Call 811 to locate underground utilities before you dig. 3. Mark your route following the natural curves of your yard. 4. Excavate shallow and wide (typically 8 to 18 inches deep and several feet wide) so it is easy to mow. 5. Build the berm on the downhill side with the excavated soil. 6. Establish a 1% to 2% grade (about 1 to 2 inches of drop for every 10 feet of length) to keep water moving without causing erosion. 7. Stabilize the surface immediately using sod, seed, or decorative stones (dry creek bed) to protect bare soil. 8.
