Antarctica Was Once a Rainforest—What Happened?

What if Antarctica was not always frozen? Around 90 million years ago, a temperate rainforest grew near the South Pole. Fossilized tree roots, pollen, spores, ancient soil and sediment reveal a lost Antarctic world of forests, rivers and months of darkness. Then everything changed. Carbon dioxide levels fell, ocean currents shifted, and expanding ice gradually buried the landscape beneath kilometers of ice. But Antarctica’s story does not end with the rainforest.
