🔄 ABC Data in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA): Antecedent, Behavior & Consequence
When a child exhibits challenging behaviors like screaming, task refusal, or tantrums it often feels unpredictable. However, every behavior occurs within a specific context. By tracking ABC Data (the 3-Term Contingency), parents, teachers, and therapists can identify environmental triggers, understand what maintains the behavior, and build effective positive support plans.
In this short guide, Faryal Kamran, International Behavior Analyst (IBA) at Lead Ideal Functional Education (LIFE), breaks down how to collect and interpret ABC data in everyday home and school routines.
📋 The ABC Breakdown:
• 🟢 Antecedent (A): The trigger or prompt immediately preceding the behavior (e.g., "Time to turn off the TV").
• 🟡 Behavior (B): The exact action using observable verbs (e.g., "Child dropped to the floor and cried" instead of "Child got mad").
• 🔴 Consequence (C): The immediate environmental result (e.g., "Parent gave 5 more minutes of TV time").
