In Norse mythology, Hel is both the daughter of Loki and the ruler of the realm that bears her name. Odin appointed her to govern a world of the dead, where many who died from sickness, old age, and causes other than battle were believed to go. Unlike Valhalla's image of feasting warriors, Hel's realm is portrayed as a colder, quieter place beneath the world of the living. This song journeys into that shadowed realm and imagines the stillness of Hel's hall, where the dead gather far from the battle songs of Odin's chosen. It also follows the story of Baldr, whose death brought even the gods into mourning. Hermóðr rides to Hel and pleads for Baldr's return, but Hel agrees only on the condition that every being weep for him. When one refuses, Baldr remains among the dead until the world is renewed after Ragnarök. May Hel's silent hall remind us that Norse mythology did not imagine a single road beyond death. Not every ending belonged to warriors, glory, or golden halls. Some belonged simply to stillness—the quiet mystery waiting beyond a life that had reached its end.
