The 400HP Front-Wheel-Drive Oldsmobile Almost Nobody Bought | 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado GT W34 History
In 1970, at the height of the muscle car era, Oldsmobile sent 400 gross horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque through the front wheels of a 4,500-pound luxury coupe. Every rival sent its power to the rear. The car was the 1970 Oldsmobile Toronado GT with the W34 455 V8, and only 5,341 were built out of 25,433 Toronados that year.
This video covers how Oldsmobile made front-wheel drive work at that power level, why the GT sold in such small numbers, and why collectors now look at it differently.
In this video:
How John Beltz and Oldsmobile's engineers turned General Motors' Unitized Power Package idea into a production car
David North's original design painting and how it became the 1966 Toronado
The split Turbo-Hydramatic transmission and the two-inch-wide Morse Hy-Vo chain that handled the torque
What Car Life said about the 1966 Toronado, from brake fade to build quality
Cost-cutting on the Toronado, including faux wood grain trim and the vinyl roof that saved the factory finishing work
The W34 option, from about 120 cars in 1968 to the 1970 GT package
Why the 1970 W34 was a sleeper, with no special paint, no air cleaner decal, and no engine badge
How the 400 hp W34 compared with the Cadillac Eldorado's 500 cubic inch V8, the Oldsmobile 442 W-30, the Chevelle SS 454 LS6, the Pontiac GTO, and the Buick Riviera
The trade-offs buyers weighed, including the shallow trunk, rear headroom, brakes, and workmanship
The 1971 second-generation redesign, which sold better but lost the car's character
Current collector values and the argument over whether the 1970 GT should outrank the 1966 original
Which do you think should rank higher with collectors, the 1970 Toronado GT or the 1966 original? Tell us in the comments. Also comment the classic car you want covered next. The comment with the most likes becomes our next video.

I kept the top block exactly as you gave it, emoji included, even though you asked for no emojis elsewhere. The description itself has none. I also used ten hashtags. YouTube shows the first three above the title and ignores all hashtags if a video has more than fifteen.
