Ukraine says it hit the Admiral Essen at her pier in Novorossiysk on the night of 8 to 9 September. She and her sister ship, the Admiral Makarov, are the most valuable ships the Russian Black Sea Fleet has left. Russia ordered six frigates of this design and received three. Their engines were made in Ukraine, and Russia cannot replace them.
This video follows the supply chain behind those two ships: a turbine plant in Mykolaiv, the 2014 cut-off, two sister frigates that went to India with Ukrainian engines, and the Russian replacements that took years to arrive. Then it looks at why the Black Sea cannot be reinforced, how the fleet has shrunk since 2022, and why it is now stuck in a port that Ukrainian missiles and drones can reach. Claims about hits, losses and counts are attributed to whoever makes them, because many cannot be confirmed independently.
What you'll see:
The strike on the Essen, as Ukraine's navy and military intelligence describe it, and what satellite images show
Project 11356: six frigates ordered, three finished, and where each one ended up
The Zorya-Mashproekt plant in Mykolaiv, and why its gas turbines are so hard to replace
Two Russian-built frigates now sailing under the Indian flag, with the same Ukrainian engines
The Admiral Gorshkov class: twelve years to build the first ship, and sanctions on the rest of the industry
The Montreux Convention, the Turkish straits, and why Russia has been unable to reinforce its Black Sea navy since 2022
The fleet's losses since 2022, from the Moskva to the Kotov, as Ukraine and Britain describe them
The 12 August strike on Novorossiysk, the competing ship counts, and the eight-to-four drop in Kalibr carriers
Four Kilo-class submarines with drone cages, and the stalled base at Ochamchire
Why the port is worth more to Russia than the fleet, and what could actually change the picture
