The moment I read it, I knew this couldn’t just become another song about being strong. The whole point is what that strength can cost someone when everybody gets so used to relying on them that nobody notices they are struggling too. “Who Carries Me?” follows a man who learned very early that attention, acceptance and even love felt like things he had to earn. As he grows older, that turns him into the person everybody calls when something goes wrong. He listens. He protects. He fixes things. He stays. Everybody feels safe because he is there. But nobody ever asks if he feels safe. The song also deals with faith. He still believes in God, but after years of loss, responsibility and being tested again and again, that faith is exhausted. He gets angry. He asks questions. He doesn’t understand why there always seems to be more weight waiting for him. But he still talks to God. That was important to me. His faith isn’t strong because it never shakes. It is strong because it does shake and he still hasn’t completely let go.
