On August 11, 2025, an 18-inch valve deep beneath the Clairton Coke Works failed — and within minutes, an ordinary maintenance job became a deadly industrial disaster. The valve had been operating inside one of North America’s largest coke-making facilities for more than 70 years. But when pressurized water became trapped inside its body during maintenance, the old cast iron ruptured. Coke oven gas began pouring into the surrounding area. Workers were ordered to evacuate. Twenty-four seconds later, the gas ignited. The explosion destroyed structures around the Battery 13 and 14 transfer area, killed two workers, injured eleven more, and caused an estimated $52.5 million in damage. But the investigation revealed that this was about far more than one broken valve. An informal maintenance method had never been properly risk-assessed, occupied buildings sat directly above hazardous gas piping, and warnings about facility siting had existed for years.
