Before electric motors could be sent deep underground, keeping a flooded mine alive required something enormous.
At Michigan’s Chapin Mine, engineers built one of the largest steam-powered mine pumping engines ever constructed in America — a 725-ton machine standing 54 feet tall, with a 40-foot flywheel and enough pumping capacity to move roughly 4 million gallons of water every day.
And it had to.
Nearby mines had already been abandoned after water overwhelmed their pumping systems. The Chapin Mine faced the same threat, forcing engineers to build a machine unlike anything the American mining industry had seen before.
In this documentary, we explore the incredible history of the Chapin Mine pumping engine — often called the Cornish Pump — from its construction in the 1890s to the underground system of pumps it powered, the mines it helped rescue, the ground movement that nearly destroyed it, and the electrical technology that eventually replaced it.
