AI in India’s Judiciary: Faster Justice, Human Judgment | Beyond the Obvious Ep. 21

Can AI help India deliver faster access to justice — without replacing human judgment? Vanakkam, naan ungal Arun. In Episode 21 of Beyond the Obvious, we explore how Artificial Intelligence could support the future of India’s judiciary through legal research, document intelligence, transcription, translation, scheduling, case-flow analytics and better citizen access. India is already moving in this direction. eCourts Phase III (2023–2027) has an approved outlay of ₹7,210 crore and includes digitisation, paperless courts, interoperability, AI, analytics and Optical Character Recognition. As of July 2026, ₹53.57 crore is earmarked under the Future Technological Advancements component of Phase III. NIC and the Centre of Excellence for eCourts have also developed LegRAA — Legal Research Analysis Assistant to assist judges with legal research and document analysis. Another tool, Digital Courts 2.1, integrates case-management capabilities with AI-enabled voice-to-text transcription and translation. Both LegRAA and Digital Courts 2.1 were reported as being in pilot testing in July 2026. The prototype is an educational technology experiment — not an official judiciary system, not legal advice, and not a tool for predicting judgments, guilt, sentencing, bail or case outcomes. The objective is simple: Use AI to reduce administrative friction around justice — not to automate justice itself. Imagine the workflow: Documents → OCR → Search → Verified Source → Human Review Voice → Transcription → Translation → Human Verification Case Data → Workflow Analytics → Better Administration Technology can organise information. Technology can improve accessibility. Technology can save time. But constitutional responsibility, reasoning, discretion and judicial judgment remain human responsibilities.
