Feeling puffy, heavy, swollen or like your body is holding onto fluid?
In this episode of FeelGood Conversations, Denise Mokadsi speaks with bodywork practitioner Louise Kerwin about the often-overlooked lymphatic system and how manual lymphatic drainage may help support healthy fluid movement through the body.
Louise explains what the lymphatic system does, why it differs from the circulatory system, what can cause lymphatic fluid to become congested, and why movement, hydration and gentle self-care can matter. She also explains how manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) works, why the pressure is much lighter than traditional massage, and why “harder” is definitely not better.
In this conversation, we explore:
common signs of reduced lymphatic flow, including swollen ankles, tight rings, puffy face and fluid retention
how the lymphatic system supports fluid balance and works alongside the immune system
why movement is so important when the lymphatic system has no central pump like the heart
how lymphatic drainage may be used after breast cancer treatment, with lymphoedema or lipoedema, and in other situations involving fluid accumulation when lymphatic drainage may not be appropriate and why medical clearance may sometimes be needed
what clients commonly notice after treatment, including feeling lighter and moving more comfortably
how to perform very gentle lymphatic self-care at home
why you should generally begin around the clavicle area rather than starting at swollen feet
and when it is better to see a trained practitioner rather than trying to manage more complex lymphatic issues yourself.
