The roots of Notting Hill Carnival can be traced back to 1959, when Trinidadian journalist and activist Claudia Jones organised a Caribbean Carnival at St Pancras Town Hall. It came during a period of racial tension in Notting Hill following the 1958 Notting Hill race riots, providing an important celebration of Caribbean identity, culture and community. Then, in 1966, the carnival moved into the streets of Notting Hill. Local social worker Rhaune Laslett helped create an outdoor community festival, with Caribbean music and culture becoming central to the event. That makes 2026 the 60th anniversary of the first street parade. Today, Notting Hill Carnival has grown into one of Europe's largest street festivals, attracting around two million people over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
