This week we welcomed our very first chicks on our microhomestead! 🐥
We’ve chosen a few different chicken breeds to add to our little backyard flock, and after spending our first week with them, we’re already learning so much about raising chicks for the first time.
There were plenty of sweet moments, a few things we didn’t expect, and even a couple of power outages that had us scrambling to make sure our little chicks stayed warm.
Come along as we introduce our new chicks, share the breeds we chose, and talk about what we’ve learnt during their first week with us.
In this episode:
0:00 Intro
0:26 A little 'outside the box', a cheap marketplace find makes a perfect a DIY chicken brooder.
1:03 A foggy morning's, country drive to pick up our new baby chicks!
1:30 First moments at home with our 5 little chicks.
4:09 We talk through which heritage chicken breeds we chose, plus their egg laying capacity and temperament.
6:58 What we experienced and learnt in our first week as first time chick raisers. And two things we'd definitely be more prepared for next time.
Thanks for spending some time with us this week, as we learn how to create a more self-sufficient life and make the most of our little suburban block.
