Brandywine Springs looks like an ordinary park outside Wilmington today.
But a century ago, thousands of people came here for something completely different.
There were trolley cars, a roller coaster, theaters, a dance hall, restaurants and a massive carousel filled with carved animals.
Then it all disappeared.

• Delaware’s forgotten amusement park
• The mineral spring that started everything
• A hotel that burned down
• The legendary “Council Oak”
• The trolley that transformed the park
• A roller coaster accident
• Archaeologists digging up the old attractions
• The remains still hiding beneath the park today
Brandywine Springs closed for good in 1923.
The rides disappeared. The trolley tracks were removed. The buildings vanished into the woods.
But nearly 70 years later, volunteers began digging — and found the old entrance arch, light sockets, carousel pieces and foundations buried beneath the ground.
And one thing from the very beginning is still there today.
The spring itself.
