Somebody wanted to build one of the biggest A.I. data centers on the East Coast near Delaware City: six million square feet, with power demand rivaling nearly a million homes. Then about two hundred neighbors packed a planning meeting, the state invoked a 1971 coastal law, and the project was dead in its proposed form. At the same time, Delaware was breaking ground on a $669 million container terminal on a former DuPont site. So I counted down ten of the projects changing the First State, from the ones already finished to the biggest gambles still ahead.
On the list: the I-95 and Route 896 interchange in Newark, the Delaware Memorial Bridge’s ship collision protection and electronic tolling, the Cape May–Lewes Ferry replacement, ChristianaCare’s $865 million expansion in Middletown, Georgetown and Camden, the new rehabilitation hospital in Newark, Wilmington’s Riverfront East, the I-95 cap in Wilmington, Project Washington, the US Wind connection at Indian River, and the Delaware Container Terminal at Edgemoor.
Which one of these do you think actually gets finished?
