There is one aisle at Walmart where everything comes in a little bag instead of a jar, and most people walk right past it on the way to the spice wall, where the same things cost three and four times as much in glass. Seven dry goods from the Hispanic aisle, every one under $2 at my Walmart this week, what each one is, the ten-minute supper or drink it makes, and the honest comparison to the American shelf, including the two places the Mexican aisle is not cheaper. And the one thing I left off because it was twelve cents over.
📖 My mother's whole way of running a house is written down in one book, The Old Mexican Way: https://oldmexicanway.com
None of this is your fault. Nobody taught you to read a bag with no English on the front.
The 7:
7. Fideo, about 57¢ (the ten-minute sopa de fideo; fry it gold first)
6. Mexican oregano, about $1.48 (not the plant in the jar; a pinch is a pot)
5. Whole cloves, about $1.63 (the bag is the spice, the jar is the furniture)
4. Maizena atole packet, about $1.08 (four mugs of hot breakfast in five minutes)
3. Knorr caldo de pollo, the small jar, about $1.78 (this or the salt shaker, never both)
2. Bay leaves, about $1.25 (a year of pots, and the flour bin)
1. Piloncillo, about $1.56 for the Iberia cone (brown sugar is cheaper by the pound; the cone is the taste)
Left off: chile de árbol at $2.12. Buy it anyway.
Said plainly: your store differs. Pour the bag into a jar with a lid, the name folded inside, the month on tape. Out of the light. The clove on a tooth is for the way to the dentist, not instead of it, and never for a child. Not medical advice.
