In my mother's house, winter was bought in October. Not a basement of cans: the fifteen things a Mexican kitchen cannot run without from the first cold week to the first warm one, bought in the month the prices are asleep, carried home in three trips on one check, and put away so the kitchen shops from the hallway until spring. The fifteen, with this week's Walmart prices, how each one keeps to March without a freezer, and the winter supper it is waiting to become.
📖 My mother's whole way of running a house is written down in one book, The Old Mexican Way: https://oldmexicanway.com
None of this is your fault. Nobody taught you that the grocery store has a calendar.
The 15:
15. Calabaza, the hard winter squash, about $4.50 (cures warm, then keeps three months; calabaza en tacha, calabaza con puerco)
14. Camote, about $1 a pound (camote enmielado)
13. Apples 3 lb, about $2.18 (ponche, empanadas, the lunch box)
12. Onions 3 lb, about $2.39 (hung in a net, away from the potatoes)
11. Potatoes 10 lb, about $4.54 (papas con huevo, picadillo, caldo, tacos de papa)
10. Cabbage, about $2.59 (the winter salad, the top of the pozole)
9. Nuez, pecans 16 oz, about $12.97 (into the freezer; the rosca, the pay de nuez)
8. Piloncillo, about $1.50 to $3 a cone (café de olla, ponche, atole, calabaza en tacha)
7. Chipotles, about $1.63 (tinga, pollo en chipotle; the seven cans)
6. Chiles secos, guajillo and árbol, about $8 (enchiladas, pozole rojo, adobo)
5. Manteca 4 lb, about $10 (there are no tamales without it)
4. Pork shoulder, about $1.88 a pound (carnitas, chile colorado, pozole, tamales)
3. Maseca 4 lb, about $3.98 (tortillas every day, tamales in December)
2. Rice 20 lb, about $11.14
1. Pinto beans 8 lb, about $6.88 (frijoles de la olla twice a week)
About $140 at my Walmart this week, in three trips. The heavy five first: beans, rice, Maseca, onions, potatoes, about $55. Buckets with lids, tape and pencil, the squash on a shelf, onions and potatoes apart, the pork and the nuez in the freezer. Prices are what Walmart showed this week; your store differs. Not medical advice.
