My first solo cross country flight a distance 152nm ( 280km). Landing at a busy class D towered airport, a non-towered class G airport, followed by another class D airport. I used pilotage, dead reckoning, and picked up VFR flight following for real-time traffic advisories, safety alerts, and emergency support. The first airport I flew to had a terminal radar service area (TRSA) which provided an upgraded level of radar services with sequencing, and separation in addition to traffic advisories. The second airport was non-towered class G and my airspeed was high on short final so i did a go around and my landing was nice. In retrospect, I probably didn't need to do a go around since that runway is long. Live and you learn. I then taxied back for departure to the third airport. As I was en route to the third airport it started to get dark and by the time I arrived into the airspace the sun had completely set. Please like and subscribe to see more. We use pilotage and dead reckoning to navigate to the destination airports. Pilotage involves identifying features like roads, rivers, and towns to verify position and course, often used in conjunction with dead reckoning for cross-country flights. Dead reckoning requires calculating heading and groundspeed to predict position between fixes, serving as a critical backup when landmarks are unavailable or obscured. Flight following (more formally, VFR traffic advisories or radar traffic information service) is a voluntary ATC radar service that provides VFR pilots with real-time traffic advisories, safety alerts, and emergency support. It's the third pillar of VFR navigation alongside pilotage and dead reckoning. What it provides: Traffic advisories – ATC calls out nearby aircraft using clock-position references (e.g., "traffic 2 o'clock, 5 miles, opposite direction, altitude 4,500") Weather updates and TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) alerts Limited vectoring when requested Emergency support – if you lose comms or have an emergency, ATC already knows your position and can initiate SAR immediately A TRSA (Terminal Radar Service Area) is a non-regulatory airspace overlay around certain busy Class D airports where ATC provides an upgraded level of radar service to VFR pilots — essentially an optional Class C.
