“I contain multitudes” stands for the embrace of contradictions. The phrase comes from Walt Whitman’s poem “Song of Myself,” in which the poet describes his own contradictions. It is also the title of a song by Bob Dylan that similarly explores the contradictions of its author. In this way the piece addresses questions of identity and the individual’s resistance to being pigeonholed into one-dimensional categories and cliches. Instead, it emphasizes the ability to accept otherness, difference, and inner contradictions and to understand them as part of one’s own capacity for action.
The patch of the piece is built during the performance according to the instructions of the score. By doing so, the patch, the piece and the performance become one, interetwined and indistintict. Contrdicting and blouring boundaries between piece, system and performance, containing contradictions by relating extreme opposites, extremely high versus extremely low frequencies, simple sine waves versus noise, extremely dense sound structure versus a homophonic line, and one synthesizer versus three synthesizers. However, these contrasts are not presented as clear opposites in succession. Instead, they are organized in an ambiguous way that allows the listener to perceive and understand both one element and its opposite at the same time.
