Thirteen human bones and an old sextant box turn up on Gardner Island in September 1940, three years after Amelia Earhart vanished over this same ocean. The British officer in charge radios his superiors: a skeleton, possibly a woman’s. Then the bones disappear. This is the story the British file tells. Gerald Gallagher, the 28-year-old officer running the new Gilbertese settlement on Gardner (today Nikumaroro) and a licensed pilot himself, orders a careful search around the skull site and sends word to Fiji: "Bones look more than four years old to me. But there seems to be very slight chance that this may be remains of Amelia Earhart." In April 1941, Dr. Hoodless of Fiji's Central Medical School measures the bones and writes one word in capital letters. Then, somewhere in Fiji, the bones are misplaced. His numbers survive on paper, and in 2018 forensic anthropologist Richard Jantz opens the old report. We test the other answers against the record: the eight sailors from the British freighter Norwich City who were never found after the 1929 wreck, the two serial numbers on the sextant box, the coconut crabs, the distress calls that listeners reported hearing. And we end at the lagoon, where satellite images show a shape called the Taraia Object and where the next search is headed. This film continues our earlier film on Earhart's last radio messages; the 1937 flight gets only a short reminder here.
