Something Trusted You

Leviticus, a human College of Lore bard, had recently been entrusted with the Wayfarer’s Coat—not as its owner, but as its steward. During a later investigation, an ancient Wayfarer cache was discovered containing a key, a sealed message, and rare star-iron cloth. An inscription made the rules clear: “The bearer may take one. The steward may take none.” Leviticus decided he was a steward. He took nothing. Instead, after returning the cache to the Keepers, he noticed three empty spaces intended for future contributions. One was marked: FOR WHAT WAS FREELY GIVEN. Leviticus had no enchanted key, rare metal, or magical artifact to offer. He was just a bard. He had songs. So he asked the Keepers what a future bearer of the coat would need to know. Together they supplied landmarks, warnings, history, and advice. Jonas, the local smith and one of the Keepers, unexpectedly supplied the opening line: “If this old coat has brought you here, Then something trusted you.” Leviticus turned their knowledge into a song—a musical map meant to help some unknown future traveler find the Keepers, understand the responsibility of carrying the coat, and remember that stewardship is not ownership, destiny, or glory. He copied the finished lyrics onto good parchment, signed and dated them according to the local calendar, rolled the parchment, tied it with ribbon, and placed it inside the ancient cache beneath the words: FOR WHAT WAS FREELY GIVEN. The other objects in the box might someday be used up. A song could be copied.
