Reminds me of a Nevil Shute book, On the Beach.’ The movie scared me. A nuclear war. Australia was the last place unaffected by radioactivity. Words on banners in town. “There’s still time, Brother.’ No, there isn’t a lot of time, as AI changes our world every 15 minutes. What about five years from now? Michael Druckman and Illah Reza Nourbakhsh have written an essential, powerful, provocative book on AI for students, parents, academics- actually, all of us earth denizens- even senior citizens, as I loosen my collar. We’re not talking ten years or twenty years from now. Maybe five years. We, the species, need to be ready. The credentials for Michael and Illah are quite amazing. I’ve read the book, taken notes, absorbed it, and taken off my Rutgers hat. Serious move for me. Our interview was poignant. Michael is brilliant beyond grasp. Eloquent, devoted (via Schools That Can, urban education), and passionate. As I like to do at this juncture, I'll deposit a few random words and thoughts from our interview. An enticement. Urgency. Sam Walton thought innovation was a risk. He just did it better. AI is NOT a spectator sport. University leaders are not prepared. A California university is now looking for non-traditional students. Winston Churchill. Charles Dickens. Marshmallow test-delayed gratification. The Robots are coming. $102 billion spent on human skills. $700 billion spent on AI data centers. THINK. He currently is a Fellow of the Leadership and Society Initiative at the University of Chicago. Michael established the “Senator Robert F. Kennedy Education Awards” in partnership with Robert and Ethel Kennedy Human Rights in 2014 to recognize K to 12 school leaders, teachers and students for moral courage and the “Schools That Can Leaders That Can Awards” in 2017 to recognize leaders giving back to our society’s well-being in service of our youth. Both recognitions remain active.
