This song is another one of Jesus' beautiful parables, as found in Matthew 13:45,46. It tells of a merchant who was seeking goodly pearls and found a pearl of great value, and then went and sold all He had and bought this wonderful pearl. This pearl has a twofold meaning. Firstly, it symbolizes Jesus and His beautiful character of love, and His righteousness-as pure and white with no defects or stains. In Him are "hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Colossians 2:3. All that can satisfy the needs and longings of our hearts can be found in Jesus. Our Saviour is the pearl so precious that nothing can be compared to Him. The Merchantman symbolizes those who are sincerely seeking truth. In the parable the pearl is not represented as a gift. The merchantman bought the pearl at the price of all that he had. Jesus is a gift, but we must receive Him and give ourselves completely to Him. Salvation is a free gift, and yet it is to be bought and sold. This market is open to all, rich and poor, all may possess it, yet no amount of worldly wealth can secure it. It is obtained by willing obedience and by giving ourselves to Christ as His own purchased possession. We cannot earn Salvation, but we are to seek for it with as much interest and perseverance as though we would abandon everything in the world for it. God wants willing obedience and asks us to give up our sins. We must make an entire surrender and die to self and then we will find This Precious Pearl.
The second meaning, is that Christ is the Heavenly Merchantman seeking His lost inheritance, goodly pearls - lost humanity. He looks at us ruined by sin, and sees what we might become through redeeming love. He collected all the riches of the universe, and laid them down in order to buy the pearl. And Jesus having found it, resets it in His own diadem. (Zechariah 9:16, Malachi 3:17)
May you be inspired to seek this pearl of great price for yourself, you will find Jesus to be more precious than anything in this world!
