We think Nigeria's problems are too unique to learn from anyone else's playbook.
Turns out that belief has a name, and it's costing us.
In this episode of Pathways, Ayokunnu Ojeniyi introduces the "fallacy of uniqueness," a sociology concept that explains why Nigerians so often dismiss lessons from other countries, and even from our own history, on the grounds that "our situation is different." He calls it Nigerian exceptionalism: the belief that our circumstances are exceptional, just in the negative direction.
Ayo walks through Dubai's transformation from a one-story desert town in the 1970s to the city it is today, and asks what happens when we dismiss that story instead of studying it. He also tells the story most Nigerians have never heard in full: how the country built an Excess Crude Account during an oil boom, used it to pay off 12 billion dollars in debt under President Obasanjo and Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, became a low-debt nation almost overnight, and then slowly forgot the discipline that got us there. Today, that same account holds less than a billion dollars.
This episode is about the difference between a country that studies its own cycles and one that keeps repeating them, and why looking outward, and backward, might be the fastest path to Nigeria's next three decades.
