You can buy the fastest computer in the world. Best processor, most memory, beautiful screen. But switch it on with a broken operating system, and none of that hardware matters. In this episode of Pathways, Ayokunnu Ojeniyi lays out his theory of change for Africa's development, built on that exact metaphor. Roads, hospitals, universities, fibre infrastructure: that's the hardware. Culture, the collection of a society's values, assumptions, and beliefs, is the operating system. And no amount of hardware fixes a society running on broken software. Ayo makes the case using a stat that stopped him in his tracks: an AI chip company recently crossed a 5 trillion dollar valuation, after taking 30 years to hit its first billion and just 2 more to go from 2 billion to 5. That's hardware moving at the speed of a functioning operating system underneath it. He also tackles a question that trips up a lot of unity conversations: does Nigeria's 250-plus languages hold the country back? He compares Nigeria to Switzerland (4 languages), Belgium (multiple languages), and Papua New Guinea (850 languages), and argues the problem was never language. It's whether a country builds a shared protocol, the way the internet lets different systems talk to each other, rather than trying to force everything into one. The episode closes on a cultural value Ayo believes Africa quietly avoids: competition. Not chaos, but real contestation of ideas, in markets, in politics, in the workplace, and why societies that avoid it rarely produce their best outcomes.
