Before The Omen, before The Krays, and somewhere between all that serious Samuel Beckett… Billie Whitelaw found time for a little back-garden bikini glamour! ☀️🔥
This clip comes from the 1971 Armchair Theatre drama “Brown Skin Gal, Stay Home and Mind Bay-Bee”, with Billie starring as Ruth, a divorced suburban mother whose life has become more than a little dull and predictable.
Ruth spends her days chatting with friends, reading, looking after her daughter and — rather memorably — sunbathing in the garden in a succession of bikinis. Not exactly the image many viewers associate with one of Britain’s most respected dramatic actresses! 😉
Things become rather more complicated when Ruth rents her basement room to Roger, a shy young Irishman played by the excellent Donal McCann. Before long there’s an unmistakable attraction between them… although both prove considerably better at thinking about romance than actually doing anything about it.
And while all that emotional tension quietly bubbles away, Billie looks absolutely fabulous soaking up the sunshine in some very early-70s swimwear.
It’s one of those lovely discoveries from vintage television where you suddenly think:
“Hang on… is that really Billie Whitelaw?” 😄
Yes, it most certainly is.
🌹 A Little About Billie Whitelaw
Born in Coventry in 1932, Billie Whitelaw developed into one of Britain’s most admired actresses, with a career spanning theatre, film, television and radio.
She began performing as a child after being sent to drama classes partly to help overcome a stutter, eventually working in repertory theatre before establishing herself on television during the 1950s. Her talent was recognised early: she won the BAFTA Television Award for Best Actress in 1960, and won the same award again in 1973.
On film, Billie appeared in an extraordinarily varied collection of roles, including Payroll (1961), Charlie Bubbles (1967), Twisted Nerve (1968), Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy (1972) and, perhaps most famously, Mrs Baylock in The Omen (1976) — one of cinema’s most unnerving nannies.
She won the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress for Charlie Bubbles and Twisted Nerve, and later received further BAFTA nominations for The Omen and The Krays.
But perhaps Billie’s most important artistic relationship was with playwright Samuel Beckett.
Billie Whitelaw died in December 2014, aged 82, leaving behind an extraordinary body of work.
Serious theatre, Hitchcock, horror classics, gritty drama… and yes, apparently a spot of bikini sunbathing in the back garden as well. Billie really could do just about anything. ❤️
