On August 7, 1932, the Soviet government made taking grain from a collective farm punishable by execution. In the twelve months before, the USSR had exported about 4.8 million tonnes of grain. In the years that followed, close to four million people in Ukraine died of hunger and its consequences — ninety percent of them in 1933.
This video follows the documented decisions, step by step: the quotas, the decree known as the Law of Spikelets, the November 1932 blacklists, the January 1933 directive that sealed the borders of Ukraine and the Kuban, and the collection campaign that kept going. It looks at what demographers have reconstructed about the dead, how the famine was denied for more than half a century, and why historians still disagree about intent even where they agree about the toll.
All visuals are original animations made for this video. No archival famine photographs are used: many images that circulate as "Holodomor photos" come from other famines.
