Urban Cycling Piacenza Route 4 - Emilia Romagna, Italy

Cycling Route 4 (Radiale 4) is part of the urban cycling network of Piacenza. It connects the city with Gossolengo, a town of around 5,000 residents located southwest of Piacenza and within its metropolitan area. This route is a good example of both the strengths and weaknesses of cycling infrastructure in Italy. Much of the section outside the urban area follows the Ciclovia del Trebbia, offering a reasonably comfortable shared-use path. However, conditions gradually deteriorate as the route enters the city. Cyclists face frequent conflicts with pedestrians, illegal parking, dooring risks, unclear wayfinding, and poorly designed intersections. Issues that often seem to stem from a desire to minimize any impact on motor traffic and on-street parking. I discuss these problems in greater detail in my review video:    • Urban Cycling in Italy Is (Almost) Impossible   Despite its shortcomings, the route still provides a competitive alternative to driving. The same trip by car can take anywhere from 17 to 30 minutes depending on traffic, while this ride took about 30 minutes and ended directly in the city center without any concern about parking. On a capable e-bike, the journey could easily be completed in under 20 minutes. Once again, this highlights how difficult it is to justify prioritizing cars in this kind of environment. For short- and medium-distance trips, the potential of cycling remains enormous, even when the infrastructure falls well short of what it could be.
