Experience the complete Simpson-Reed Trail in stunning 4K as I hike through one of my favorite old-growth redwood forests in Northern California. Located in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, this peaceful loop takes you beneath enormous coast redwoods surrounded by lush ferns, moss, and dense forest. For more information about hiking Simpson-Reed Trail, read my full guide here: https://happywanders.com/simpson-reed... The Simpson-Reed Trail is approximately 1 mile and takes about 30 minutes to complete at a quicker pace, although I recommend allowing closer to 1 hour if you want to stop for photos and take in the scenery. With only about 62 feet of elevation gain, this is an extremely easy hike that I rate 2/10 in difficulty. The trail is mostly flat, heavily shaded, and a great option for families, seniors, or anyone looking for an easy way to experience giant redwoods without committing to a long hike. The trail begins with the Simpson-Reed Grove Trail, a loop through a magical old-growth forest where massive redwoods are scattered throughout the entire hike. Along the way, you'll encounter enormous fallen trees, vibrant green ferns, towering trunks, and a gigantic redwood stump. Unlike some of the more popular redwood hikes, Simpson-Reed felt quieter and more natural during my visit. I visited on a Friday afternoon in June and had no trouble finding parking, although the area can get busier during peak periods. The trail can be visited year-round, and the dense redwood canopy provides shade throughout almost the entire hike. 📍 Location: Simpson-Reed Trail – Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, California 🥾 Trail Information: • Distance: Approximately 1 mile • Time: About 30 minutes to 1 hour • Elevation Gain: Approximately 62 feet • Difficulty: 2/10 – Very Easy • Type: Loop • Permits: No hiking permit required • Dogs: Not permitted on the trail • Shade: Nearly the entire trail • ADA Accessible: Listed as ADA accessible • Best Time: Year-round • Overall Rating: 9.1/10 🌲 Highlights: • Full Simpson-Reed Trail hike in 4K • Massive old-growth coast redwoods • Giant fallen redwood trees • Lush green ferns and moss • Gigantic redwood stump • Quiet, natural forest atmosphere • Easy and family-friendly hiking One of my favorite things about Simpson-Reed is how quickly you become immersed in the redwoods. The trail doesn't require a major physical effort, yet you're surrounded by gigantic trees for nearly the entire hike. In my opinion, it offers a more natural hiking experience than the busier Grove of Titans Trail. It's short, easy, shaded, and packed with the kind of massive redwoods that make Northern California so special.
