What started as a joke on Pimp My Ride eventually became normal across the performance-car industry.
Volkswagen introduced the Soundaktor in the Golf GTI. BMW brought Active Sound Design to the M5, playing recorded engine audio through the car's speakers. Porsche took a different route with the Sound Symposer.
Then AMG introduced Real Performance Sound.
Unlike a simple prerecorded soundtrack, AMG's system can use an exhaust pressure sensor to capture real pulsations, process them and feed the result back into the cabin. But owners of cars like the GT 63 S noticed something strange: some of that aggressive sound can become more obvious with the windows closed.
And now AMG is taking the idea much further.
Its upcoming electric AMG GT 4-Door Coupe has no V8, no cylinders and no exhaust pulsations to amplify, yet Mercedes has already demonstrated it with a fully synthetic V8-style soundtrack.
In this video you'll discover:
• How fake V8 sound went from an MTV joke to an industry-wide practice
• Why Volkswagen introduced the Soundaktor
• How BMW's Active Sound Design works differently
• Why Porsche's Sound Symposer is closer to real mechanical sound
• How AMG Real Performance Sound processes actual exhaust pulsations
• Why GT 63 S owners questioned what they were hearing
• How AMG is creating V8-style sound for a car with no engine at all
• Where the line between real performance sound and engineered theatre starts to disappear

Comment below: if an AMG sounds incredible but the sound is partly or completely synthetic, does that change how you feel about the car?
