In 1545, King Henry VIII watched helplessly as the Mary Rose, one of England’s most powerful Tudor warships, sank in the Solent during a battle with France. Around 415 men were aboard, but only about 25 survived. Nearly 390 men died in a disaster that unfolded in less than five minutes.
For centuries, the Mary Rose remained hidden beneath the water until archaeologists rediscovered the wreck in the 20th century. Decades of underwater excavation eventually recovered 179 sets of human remains along with thousands of artifacts, weapons, tools, and personal belongings. The skeletons revealed how many victims drowned or were crushed as the ship rapidly overturned.
Modern science also uncovered unexpected details about the crew. Isotope analysis showed that several men had grown up outside Britain, including the famous Archer Royal, whose childhood origins appear to have been in North Africa. Researchers also reconstructed his face and uncovered evidence of a lifetime spent training with powerful war bows.
Today, historians still debate the exact cause of the sinking, with theories involving wind, ship stability, gunport placement, and crew actions.
