In 1785, 220 French sailors, scientists, artists, and officers set out aboard La Boussole and L’Astrolabe on one of the most ambitious exploration missions of the 18th century. Led by Jean François de Galaup, Count of La Pérouse, the expedition crossed oceans, mapped unknown coastlines, recorded plants and animals, and expanded Europe’s understanding of the Pacific.
Then everything changed. Twenty one men died in the dangerous waters of Alaska, while another twelve Frenchmen were killed during a violent encounter in Samoa. After reaching Botany Bay in Australia in 1788, both ships disappeared into the Pacific. No European ever saw the expedition alive again.
Decades later, clues led investigators to Vanikoro. Archaeologists discovered two wrecks, evidence of a survivor camp, expedition equipment, and even the remains of one unidentified sailor. Evidence suggests some survivors built a vessel from the wreckage and sailed away, but their final destination remains unknown.
This is the extraordinary story of La Pérouse’s lost expedition, the discoveries that solved part of the mystery, and the ending that history still cannot explain.
