FirstPrinciples Talks presents Around the Forces in 80 Microseconds | AI, CERN, and the Future of Physics Speaker: Philip Harris To learn more about FirstPrinciples and the AI Physicist: https://www.firstprinciples.org/ The Large Hadron Collider transformed modern physics. It enabled the discovery of the Higgs boson, produced some of the world’s most precise measurements of fundamental forces, and generated incomprehensible amounts of experimental data. In this talk, MIT physicist Philip Harris explores how artificial intelligence is contributing the future of experimental physics at the LHC. As traditional discovery strategies encounter diminishing returns, new AI-driven approaches are opening entirely different ways of identifying signals and measuring rare phenomena. The talk examines how machine learning can move beyond data analysis and become part of the real-time decision-making infrastructure of modern experiments. Topics covered include: • AI-driven discovery pipelines at the Large Hadron Collider • Real-time machine learning systems for particle physics experiments • Custom AI hardware and electronics for next-generation detectors • New approaches to Higgs boson and dark matter measurements • End-to-end AI pipelines for gravitational wave astrophysics • The future of automated scientific discovery in physics About the speaker Philip Harris joined the MIT faculty in 2017. Born in São Paulo, he received his B.S. in Physics from Caltech in 2005 and his Ph.D. from MIT in 2011 on research performed at CERN with the Large Hadron Collider. From 2011 to 2013, Philip was a CERN fellow working on the Higgs boson discovery. From 2014 to 2017, he served as a CERN staff scientist working on dark matter searches at the CMS experiment. He is one of the founders of the Fast Machine Learning Organization, experimental coordinator of the Institute for AI and Fundamental Interactions (IAIFI), and deputy director of the Accelerated Artificial Intelligence Algorithms for Data-Driven Discovery (A3D3) Institute.
