Chapter 6: Representing Molecules | Lecture 2 of 7
General Chemistry: The Complete College Lecture Series
This chapter covers the octet rule, Lewis structures, electronegativity, bond polarity, formal charge, resonance and the exceptions to the octet rule.
This is the first half of Section 6.2, which explains electronegativity, the ability of an atom in a compound to attract the shared electrons in a bond, and how it determines the type of bond. We see how electronegativity follows atomic radius across the periodic table: fluorine, with the smallest radius among the reactive nonmetals, is the most electronegative element, and electronegativity increases across a period and decreases down a group. We compare chlorine and sodium and why metals reach a noble gas configuration by losing electrons. Then we use the difference in electronegativity to classify bonds as nonpolar covalent (equal sharing), polar covalent (unequal sharing) or ionic (a metal and a nonmetal, where electrons are transferred), using HF and NaF as examples, and finish with a quick eye test: if a compound contains a metal it contains an ionic bond. Part 2 of this section continues with practice problems, dipoles and percent ionic character.
These are comprehensive general chemistry lecture videos, built to help students succeed in the course, with clear step-by-step explanations, closed captions and practice quiz questions.
