Same people. Same language. Same ruins in 1945. And the East of Germany actually had more of the factories. Yet by 1989, East Germans waited more than ten years for a tiny plastic car, and they produced, by most estimates, only about a third as much as West Germans. Even today, more than thirty-five years after reunification, the old border still shows up in wages, wealth and even in the streetlights of Berlin. So how did two halves of one country, starting from the same rubble, end up so far apart? It comes down to two doors again, and Germany shows what happens when the locked one suddenly flies open. In this animated history documentary we go from "Year Zero" in 1945, through the D-Mark and the Berlin Airlift, the economic miracle, the 1953 uprising, the Berlin Wall, Trabants and the Stasi, to the night the Wall fell, reunification and the gap that is still there today. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro: one sentence that opened the Wall 2:56 1945: Year Zero 6:40 1948: The Money Trick 11:11 1949: Two Germanys 14:40 1953: The Uprising 17:45 1961: The Wall 22:06 1971: Two Ways to Run a Country 27:29 1989: The Door Flies Open 32:22 1990: The Hard Landing 35:45 Today 38:32 Ending: two doors, again 📚 MAP & DATA CREDITS Night-lights imagery: NASA Earth Observatory, Black Marble 2016.
