Taimadera, in Nara, carries nearly 1,400 years of history.
For this film, Flow of Japan collaborated with Taimadera Nakanobo to document the daily life of Jitsue Matsumura, the 58th-generation deputy head priest.
His day begins with tending the garden and caring for the wild mountain and field plants he grows. From guiding visitors to goma fire rituals and shakyo sutra copying, we follow the everyday practices that continue to sustain this place.
Alongside them are the prayers and traditions that have been passed down here for generations.
With special permission for this production, we were also allowed to film inside areas where photography and filming are normally restricted, including the Taimadera Mandala enshrined in the Main Hall and other important cultural properties.
Having grown up surrounded by this temple since childhood, what has Jitsue Matsumura inherited, and what does he hope to pass on to the next generation?
Rather than looking at 1,400 years of history as something belonging only to the past, this documentary explores it through the life of one person who is still carrying it forward today.
