Review & Overview of the Kato 0 Series Shinkansen 3 Year Revisit Model Railway Reviews Today we take an in-depth look at the Kato 0 Series that was part of the 2021 re-run. Two packs make up the full-length 16-carriage Hikari and Kodama formation, which was operated from 1969. We begin with the standard pack, then attach the extra eight carriages to run the train in its full length. We examine the model in detail, pointing out what's accurate and inaccurate, then run the model on the layout with a few simple tests. The first units entered service in 1964 along with the opening of the new Tokaido main line that ran between Tokyo and Osaka. The first order consisted of 30 12-carriage sets built by the various manufacturers. These sets would be lengthened to 16 carriages from 1969 as the demand and popularity of the service grew. In the end, 3216 carriages forming 224 sets were manufactured. When JNR was privatised, the fleet was split between JR Central and JR West for use on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansens. They operated until 2008, retiring from the Kodama service after 44 years.
