Long ago people ate their food raw and huddled shivering in the dark. The god Prometheus saw it — but Zeus, king of the gods, had ruled that fire was for the gods alone. At dawn, as the sun god's chariot came out of the east, Prometheus stood on a mountain top and held a hollow fennel stalk to its blazing wheel: one spark jumped in. He carried it down to earth, and soon fires dotted the dark land like fallen stars. Furious, Zeus had the forge god chain him to a cliff in the Caucasus and sent an eagle to peck at him day after day. Asked to say he was wrong, Prometheus only answered: “Look down there. The children have stopped shivering.” Many years later the hero Heracles shot the eagle down and snapped the chain. Words: 锁 (suǒ, to lock or chain) and 悬崖 (xuán yá, a cliff).
