Sorry for the delay. 25 years later, I’m returning to Mallet Island for a full Devil May Cry retrospective. The original Devil May Cry didn’t just help create the stylish action genre. It introduced Dante, gave us one of gaming’s most unforgettable gothic worlds, and laid the foundation for everything that Devil May Cry 3, Devil May Cry 4, and Devil May Cry 5 would eventually become. In this 25th Anniversary retrospective, I’m going back to where it all started: Devil May Cry 1 on the PlayStation 2. We’re talking Hideki Kamiya, the game’s origins as an early Resident Evil 4 prototype, Mallet Island’s incredible gothic architecture, Dante’s original characterization, the birth of stylish combat, Ebony & Ivory, Alastor, Ifrit, the janky camera, those godforsaken underwater sections, and why this strange, beautiful game still has an identity none of its sequels ever completely replicated. But this one is also personal. Devil May Cry became part of my life before I was even old enough to understand why. It shaped my taste in games, music, aesthetics, goth culture, and ultimately a pretty significant chunk of who I became. After going through a massive loss of identity over the last couple of years, I realized that maybe understanding who I am meant going back to one of the places where that identity first started taking shape. So after more than two decades, it was time to return to Mallet Island. Does Devil May Cry still hold up in 2026? Absolutely. Perfectly? Hell no. But maybe perfection was never the point. This is Devil May Cry: 25 years of style, jank, conviction, and one of the coolest games ever committed to a disc.
