How do you talk to potential customers without pitching?
You ask about what they already do, and then you say nothing. This session gives you the five questions to ask, three more to write yourself, and the rule that governs all of it: if you are talking more than a quarter of the time, stop.
The enemy this week is never feeling ready. The product is unfinished, the deck is not right, you are still unsure who it is for, so the conversations never start. The conversations are the only thing that tells you what finished looks like.
The hardest instruction here is to leave your expertise outside the room. You have fifteen or twenty years in this field and you know the problem better than the person across the table. That is exactly why you walk in with no assumptions and listen. These conversations do not exist to confirm what you already believe. They exist to find out whether the market wants what you are about to spend a year building.
The five questions: walk me through how you handle it at the moment, when did that last cause you a real problem, what did it cost you in time or money or both, what have you tried, and why did that not work. Then write three of your own, about their world, none about your idea.
Before those comes the opener and the this-or-that. Is this something you handle yourself, or do you hand it off? That one question tells you whether you are talking to the person with the problem or someone standing next to it.
Record their exact words, verbatim, not your summary. Febreze relaunched on a line its own customers used rather than the one the marketers wrote, and that language is what will rewrite your offer in session five.
Also this session: write your keep, sharpen, pivot and stop rules now, before you have any data to bend them with.
