How to get your first paying customer when you have deep expertise but no customers yet. For domain experts in their 40s and 50s who have started something on the side and want to know if anyone will pay, without quitting the job.
This is a talk for people with 15 to 25 years in one industry who have started something (a company name, a rough deck, or a product built with AI on weekends) but have no paying customers yet. Matt Ainsworth explains where you sit on the startup map, why most advice is written for later stages, and the three things that stall an idea at day zero.
Some of the questions it answers:
Am I too old to start a startup?
No. The research on high-growth founders points to middle age, not youth.
Should I join an accelerator?
Accelerators are useful, but most want a full-time commitment and equity and are looking for traction you do not have yet. At day zero the job is simpler: find one paying customer.
How do I find my first customer?
Define who feels the pain and has money, have real conversations instead of pitching, look for buying signals rather than compliments, then set a price you can say out loud and get paid.
What is the Day Zero Method?
Define it, prove it, sell it, in a loop, aiming at proven demand: a paying customer or a clean no.
