It is Sunday, December 7, 1941. You are thirty years old, a boatswain's mate second class aboard the battleship USS Arizona, moored at Ford Island in Pearl Harbor. Your brother Frank sleeps forward under the big guns, and your father's silver watch ticks under your pillow. This film follows the morning hour by hour, from reveille and the cold pineapple at breakfast to the awning going up for church on the fantail. Along the way come a week-old newspaper that warned of a strike, the padlocked ammunition boxes, and the planes parked wing to wing. Then the attack begins at 7:55. The bomb finds the forward magazine, and the harbour burns. The story goes on through the hours and days after, to what the day cost, how America went to war, and what became of the ship and the men who stayed with her.
