A few days before Christmas 1944, a kitchen jeep climbed a frozen mountainside in Alsace with the mail. One package was for a rifleman in Company I of the 397th Infantry named Lowry Bowman, from his Aunt Mabel: a necktie, and a five-pound fruitcake. He and his foxhole partner ate all of it that night. The morning report for December 19 moves him from duty to sick, and he later called the hospital heaven on earth. He didn’t mean the fruitcake. This World War II documentary is about what an American infantryman in France or Belgium did that winter to stay warm, keep his feet, and eat something hot, when the Army’s gear mostly hadn’t arrived. In the late summer of 1944 the armies had raced across France faster than anyone had planned, and gasoline and ammunition came first. Clothing was in the everything-else pile. By December the backlog of quartermaster cargo at the ports had grown to nearly 89,000 tons. Major General Robert Littlejohn had asked for a 6,000-ton airlift for winter gear. The answer was no. 0:00 The fruitcake and the hospital 0:49 Why the gear wasn’t there 1:46 Littlejohn’s warning and the gamble 2:50 Sleeping bags that never came 3:56 The Eisenhower jacket and the overcoat 4:44 Sizes, shortages, and seventy different items 5:38 The hole and the rules for sleeping 6:29 Seven pairs of socks and four-buckle galoshes 7:03 TNT, hay, and a ditch in Belgium 8:07 Bill Mauldin and Willie and Joe 9:36 Fire: the Coleman stove and the K-ration box 11:17 What was in the three boxes 12:35 Pork and beans that exploded 14:05 Turkey for Thanksgiving 15:00 Trench foot and the numbers 16:38 The boot, the overshoe, and “lousy” footwear 🏷 HASHTAGS #WWII #WW2History #BattleOfTheBulge #MilitaryHistory #AmericanHistory #Battle #Hero #Veteran #Biography #USArmy #Germany #WorldWar2 #Infantry #TrenchFoot #Navy #USNavy #PacificWar #Japan #Quartermaster #Winter1944Welcome to Off Duty Tales — where curious stories come to life, one stick figure at a time.
