Isaac Roth Blumfield - You hold the present as if it were a memory for percussion and electronics Recorded on December 17th 2024, at Theater Pavillon Luzern by Musician's Eye. You hold the present as if it were a memory was commissioned by Alexandre Silva, funded by Fachausschuss Musik BS/BL, and premiered on November 14th at PROGR Bern, Switzerland. PROGRAM NOTES: "A place is more than a collection of people, of buildings, of animals, and of objects; it has a vitality which can never be fully captured. For years, I have recorded the sounds around me, not because they are complete, but rather because they contain an absence that forces me to remember that place, that moment, that feeling, while always knowing that, once I listen, it is already gone. In ‘You hold the present as if it were a memory,’ I work with these recordings, sometimes filtering them and making melodies out of them, sometimes blending with percussion to create a strange song-world, sometimes dissolving them. It is a piece about holding onto something which is fading away – at times the piece denies this, and at times it tries to destroy it itself. We live in a world which feels increasingly dangerous and violent, and the threat of ecological destruction increasingly haunts us and our sense of our shared future. And yet in this nightmare which comes ever closer, our world can still be so beautiful, so rich, so alive: how do we hold this contradiction?
